With the typical kitchen remodel coming in around $20,000, most people need a more manageable way to update their homes. Here are four smarter ways to remodel your home and get more bang for your buck.
- Comfortable shower instead of large bathtub. Many houses retain fixtures from the past, notably large tubs from the late 70s/early 80s. By taking them out and replacing them with a large but still manageable shower stall, people can actual use the space every day, rather than for an occasional bubble bath. These showers take up less space, use less hot water, and are more sanitary than a tub.
- Group windows together facing the best view instead of scattering them around the house. Capitalize on a great view from your house — beautiful trees, a body of water, or a backyard entertainment area. Take excess windows from bedrooms and baths and use them to connect the inside of your house with the outside. It’s a great way to enjoy the landscaping you’ve done or natural beauty of a surrounding area.
- Use a walk-in pantry instead of cabinets. Cabinets are expensive and you want them all to look identical. Most of them are up high and hard to reach, and the wall space they take up could be better used for windows (see tip #2). A pantry takes up less space, costs less to build, and is easier to use.
- Separate your bathroom functions. For those using shared bathrooms, the morning rush can be a hectic and stressful time. By compartmentalizing your bathroom into separate areas, two people can use the bathroom at once while still maintaining privacy. The pocket door shown above is an even smarter space saver.
