Here’s a few summertime cleaning/maintenance tips to keep your home in top shape.
1. Test Smoke/Carbon Monoxide detectors and replace the batteries if needed.
2. Get your cooling system ready. Whether it is time to install your window air conditioner or get your central air unit inspected and serviced by a professional, you do not want to wait for the 100-degree day to find out something is not working properly.
3. Clean ceiling fan blades and set them to run counter-clockwise. This will pull cold air from the ceiling and help keep your home cooler during the warmer months. This is especially helpful if you do not have a/c.
4. Clean or replace your showerheads. Built-up mineral deposits will affect the water flow and longevity of your showerhead. Easiest way to clean is unscrew and soak it in a bucket of vinegar overnight. Reattach and let the water run through before using and you will have a like new showerhead again.
5. Clean bathroom drains. Nobody’s favorite chore, but if not regularly maintained, can lead to costly plumbing issues down the road. To clean, simply pull out the drain mechanism, clear the drain with a stick or a snake, and finally rinse it down.
6. Clean the baseboards of your home. Use a damp cloth and wipe away all the dust and grime.
7. Wash the interior and exterior of your windows. Dirt and debris have built up and you will instantly notice how much brighter it is inside once they are clean.
8. Check your attic and basement. In your attic, look for signs of dampness, mildew, leaks, holes in the roof, and pests. In the basement, check for leaks, pests, mold, and mildew.
9. Vacuum/dust your vents. Bathroom vents especially can become clogged up due to the humidity in the room. Remove the cover to clean out the vent completely.
10. Clean the dryer vent and exhaust duct. Remove the hose/duct from the back of your dryer and vacuum out all of the lint.
11. Whether you’re resealing or just getting the grime off, power washing your deck will make this chore much easier.
