What better way to start saving money than by helping create an eco-friendly home? Use these tips to start saving the environment from your own house.

  1. Change your air filters regularly. Dirty filters make your heating and cooling systems work harder. Not only does this waste energy, it also is a drain on your finances. Change your filters regularly — it’s easy and can be replaced by you, the homeowner.
  2. Replace your old water heater. Tankless gas units heat the water only when it is needed, rather than always have hot water ready. For an electric solution, a heat pump hot water heater is typically more than twice as efficient as a standard electric-resistance tank.
  3. Have an energy audit. By having your utility company perform an energy audit, you can identify where any leaks exist, particularly around windows, doors, attics and basements. You can then seal the house, and you may even get a tax credit for a percentage of the cost.
  4. Upgrade to low-flow bathroom fixtures. Low-flow toilets can save up to 3,000 gallons of water per toilet, per year, while Aerators can be added to faucets and showerheads to limit the amount of water being used.
  5. Use sustainable materials for remodels. Worn out kitchen countertops can be replaed with materials that feature recycled content, such as Formica, quartz, glass and even paper.
