Beginning in 1840, many Germans immigrated to Milwaukee, which had a reputation as a “boom-town.” Milwaukee had become a national center for German Catholicism. By 1860, German immigrants and their American-born children constituted a considerable majority of Milwaukee. By 1880, native Germans made up 27% of the city’s population, the highest concentration of a single immigrant group in any American city. Most Germans could easily feel at home in the city with its beer gardens, fish fries, German newspapers, music and recreational societies. German immigrants had a tremendous influence on the culture and character of Milwaukee, which soon was called the “German Athens.”
German Fest was established in 1981 to celebrate German culture, food, travel, history, music and much more! Since its start, many well-known German restaurants and food services from Southeast Wisconsin make the trip to provide attendees with authentic German fare.
Eat Drink And Be Merrier
German Fest is known for their daily fresh culinary creations. Bavarian Chocolate Torte, Black Forest Torte, Bee Sting cake, Bienenstich, German Folklore, Sachertorte, Austrian chocolate cake, Napoleon Cake, German Chocolate Torte — more than enough options to choose from! With over 35,000 pieces of pastry, torte, strudel and kuchen, German Fest will satisfy any sweet tooth.
German Fest also features many adult beverages too. German Fest and their friends at Miller/Coors and Beer Capitol Distributing have a free Bier Tasting Tent this year. Niche Wine and Spirits, the official spirits of German Fest, will feature some of Germany’s oldest and renowned distillers to sample and drink.
Entertainment
German Fest will feature local German talent and national talent too. Glockenspiel performances will take place every day. There is a Soccer Tournament and Battle of the Mascots soccer game. Sunday features the 9th Annual Dachshund Derby Race. There will be two parades — a traditional German parade, as well as a Children’s parade, too. Church service will be held Sunday morning, beginning at 10:30am.
