Shorewest Shares: Scary Things to Avoid When Buying a Home Posted on October 22, 2014 by socialmedia by Fall is here, which means changing colors, preparing for the winter and Halloween. Some home sellers might go into hibernation while motivated sellers will keep their homes on the market through the winter. In honor of Halloween next week, here are some of the scariest things that homebuyers should avoid this season: Geological problems. If your potential new home is built on a slope, hill or valley, consult a geotechnical engineer to make sure nature won’t spook your home. Nothing is scarier when your home passes a home inspection but then find out during the first big thunderstorm your retaining wall doesn’t hold up. Faulty siding. Homes built between the 1980s and 1990s may have siding that could absorb or trap water against the house. Consult with your home inspector to make sure your siding isn’t rotting. Windows. Have your windows double checked before moving in. Make sure they lock and aren’t letting in drafts. Bad neighbors. Loud, messy or inconsiderate neighbors may be hard to overcome. When looking at the house, notice your neighbors: Do they have children too? Or a dog? Busy streets. High traffic areas and noises can be enough to spook anybody from purchasing a home on a busy route. When you look at the house, make sure you’re looking at it at different times of the day. If there’s a school nearby, there may be more traffic in the morning and early afternoon. Water damage or mold. Water damage comes in lots of forms: water sweeping into basements, pooling into crawl spaces, leaking in from siding, trickling down from the roof, etc. Left alone, water causes rot and mold. Make sure your home inspection passes. Fire and carbon monoxide detectors. Nothing is scarier than a faulty fire and carbon monoxide detector. Insert new batteries and double check with your fire department to make sure your fire and carbon monoxide detectors are working properly. Security system. Double check dead bolts, window locks and your security system. If you don’t have one, you can always have one installed before you move in. Buying a home should never be scary.
